“time stamp XXX s in the future” messages seen during upgrade
Sometimes during a Junos upgrade, you might see messages like these:
tar: +CONTENTS: time stamp Mar 15 06:28 2015 is 26228139 s in the future tar: +COMMENT: time stamp Mar 15 06:28 2015 is 26228139 s in the future
This is because the current time on the Juniper device is in the past in comparison to the timestamp of the Junos release to which the device is being upgraded.
Each Junos release has a timestamp of when it was created and the release could not have existed before that.
Seeing the messages is not a problem, it’s just an indication that the device doesn’t have the right time/date.
Below you have an example.
The current time is 15th May 2014 and I will upgrade the device to 14.1X53-D16 that has a timestamp of 15th March 2015:
{master:0} root@QFX5100> show system uptime fpc0: -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Current time: 2014-05-15 16:51:19 UTC System booted: 2014-05-15 16:25:04 UTC (00:26:15 ago) Protocols started: 2014-05-15 16:28:44 UTC (00:22:35 ago) Last configured: 2014-05-15 16:40:59 UTC (00:10:20 ago) by root 4:51PM up 26 mins, 2 users, load averages: 0.01, 0.06, 0.15 {master:0} root@QFX5100>
Once you start the upgrade, you will start seeing these messages:
